Michael grew up in working class New York.

His father taught at a private Catholic College for $12,000 a year, and had eight mouths to feed. Everyone wore hand-me-down clothes.

They were the “poorest family on Maple Avenue,” and Michael likes to joke, “It wasn’t on the other side of the tracks… it was on the tracks.”

To help earn money for the family, he worked afternoons and evenings as a paperboy, in a car wash, for a silver polisher, in a warehouse, as a busboy and as an aluminum-siding salesman…

He had no role models. He never took a class of business, doesn’t read the business press, and today, he doesn’t even like to talk business.
